Population

Population growth in the Town of North Castle reflects the pattern of rural to suburban development typical of the post World War II years. Like many other suburban communities in Westchester County and the nation, the Town experienced a surge of population growth between 1940 and 1970. The overall rate of growth was moderate between 1970 and 2010. 

The growth rate is attributed to national economic conditions, including the rising cost of property, lack of easily developable land and the late-2000s financial crisis, considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The population of North Castle in 2000 was 10,849 persons and increased to 11,841 persons in 2010, representing a population increase of 9% between 2000 and 2010. It is noted that the Town experienced its largest decade of population growth between 1950 and 1960, when the population increased 76.3%.

Between 2000 and 2010, North Castle population grew faster than most of its neighbors. Pound Ridge, New Castle, Bedford and Mt. Pleasant all grew at a slower rate than North Castle. Harrison, the fastest growing municipality in Westchester, grew 14% during the same time period. It is noted that North Castle’s 9% growth was the third highest growth rate in Westchester County.

Housing Units

The Town experienced growth in the number of housing units between 2000 and 2010. In 2000 the Town had 3,706 housing units and in 2010 the Town contained 4,135 housings units, an increase of 11.6% (429 unit increase). A significant number of housing units (and population) in the 2010 Census is attributable to the Whippoorwill Hills development, Thomas Wright and Sands Mill developments, which were either not completed or occupied at the time of the 2000 Census.
