Landmarks Preservation Committee News
By Susan Shimer, Chair

For those who have not had a chance to link to the North Castle Landmarks Preservation page on the Town website, we would like to give you a short overview of what we do.  Chapter 126 of the Code of the Town of North Castle, entitled Landmarks Preservation, sets forth our mission:

“It is hereby declared as a matter of public policy that the protection, enhancement and perpetuation of structures of special character or special historical or aesthetic interest or value is a public necessity and is required in the interest of the health, prosperity, safety and welfare of the people. The purpose of this chapter is to:

A. Effect and accomplish the protection, enhancement, perpetuation and reasonable degree of control over structures, landmarks and preservation districts . . . . . which represent or reflect elements of the Town's cultural, social, economic, political and architectural history.

B. Safeguard the Town's historic, aesthetic and cultural heritage…

C. Foster civic pride in the beauty and noble accomplishments of the past.

D. Enhance and protect the Town's attractions to tourists and visitors.

E. Promote the use of designations for the education, pleasure and welfare of the people of the Town.”

In other words, caring about our past is important for our future.  One way we can care about our past is to preserve historic structures to assure that present and future generations can visualize what life was like in times past.

If you have a historic structure you would like to landmark, please contact the Landmarks Preservation Committee by sending an email to sshimer@optonline.net. We will be in touch with you and would be pleased to discuss with you the means of accomplishing your goal of preserving our Town’s heritage.
