Elijah Miller House - Washington's Headquarters By Doris Finch Watson North Castle Town Historian
County Legislator John Nonna has been taking a strong lead in trying to help us preserve this early building that played such an important role in the Revolutionary War as Washington’s Headquarters. As head of the Miller House Committee, I asked Leg. Nonna to arrange a meeting for us directly with County Executive Astorino, and the meeting was held on February 22nd. Six members of the Miller House Committee, Legislator Nonna and Supervisor Weaver attended and submitted a list of questions and concerns regarding moving the Miller House to the designated site near the Kensico Dam Park, which was once part of the Miller Farmland. We were told we would have a reply from Astorino’s office by March 4th. That date passed without answers. On March 14th, Leg. Nonna wrote a strong letter seeking immediate answers. Now, Legislator Nonna, the Miller House Committee and the newly organized non-profit corporation (Friends of Miller House/Washington’s Headquarters) are all awaiting a reply from County Executive Astorino’s office. We must save this structure quickly for it is deteriorating in its present location across from a concrete plant. It deserves to be moved to the new location provided that it can continue to be recognized as both a National and State Historic Landmark. Westchester County, who owns it, will be responsible for its restoration and making it available once again for visits from school children and the public. The Bond was approved, and we now await a reply and action from Mr. Astorino.
