Zero Waste Day
Saturday, April 30th
9am to 3pm
North Castle Town Hall

The Town’s fifth Zero Waste Day will be held rain or shine. This bi-annual event has been a great success. Residents can clean out their homes and garages and donate gently used goods to our neighbors in need. Additionally, you can responsibly dispose of electronic waste and scrap metals and shred personal papers. A donation receipt for tax purposes will be provided by Furniture Sharehouse, Community Center of Northern Westchester, Recycle a Bicycle and Adopt a Dog. The following items will be accepted.

E-Waste: Computers (including laptops), TVs, CRTs, small scale servers, monitors (non-CRT), keyboards and mice, copiers and scanners, fax machines, printers, VCRs, DVRs, DVD players, electronic and video game consoles, portable digital music players, digital converter boxes, cable or satellite receivers, cell phones and PDAs, microwaves and stereo equipment.

Scrap Metal: Metal file cabinets, metal bed frames, metal fence pieces, hot water tanks and heaters, treadmills, basketball hoops, antennas, metal appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, toasters, coffee pots, mixers), any other unwanted scrap metal items or pieces.

Furniture Sharehouse: Sofas, armchairs (NO stains, excessive fading or rips), metal bed frames (no king-sized), mattresses and box springs (no stains, no kings and in good condition only), tables and chairs, dressers, occasional tables, bookshelves, desks, lamps, mirrors, clean area rugs, TVs (no larger than 27”), small electric appliances in working order (microwaves, toasters), artwork.

Community Center of Northern Westchester:  Clean, gently used spring and summer clothing and shoes for men, women and children and clean, gently used linens (sheets, towels, blankets, comforters).

Recycle a Bicycle:  Adult and children’s used bicycles in good condition, free of rust and major structural damage, bike parts and bike tools.

Adopt a Dog:  Wire dog crates, airline kennels, dog and cat beds and toys, linens in any condition (sheets, towels, comforters, blankets) and balls (basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, tennis balls).

Shred-it: Up to 4 boxes (10”x12”x15”) of personal papers will be accepted for shredding.

Save your e-waste, scrap metal and gently used items year round to donate at an upcoming Zero Waste Day.

The next Zero Waste Day is planned for Saturday, October 15.

Adopt a Bin Program

Two years ago the newly formed Recycling Committee initiated a drive to select and place reliable, attractive and functional 3-source recycling bins throughout our parks and recreation sites.  It was determined that 22 receptacles would be needed to completely outfit the Town’s green spaces.  Through the generosity of several community groups, Armonk United Soccer Club, Armonk Lions, Byram Hills Preschool Association and Armonk Cub Scouts, six bins were acquired in 2009. These attractive and durable green receptacles continue to allow residents to separate their trash, paper, glass, cans and plastic bottles while enjoying the parks.

Our newest bin (number 7) was purchased last month through the donations collected during the 2010 Zero Waste Days.  To reach our goal, we still need 15 recycle bins to adequately service North Castle’s green spaces and accommodate proper recycling.

The Recycling Committee is now beginning a new cycle of solicitations.  If you are a member of a community organization, business, homeowner’s group or an individual, please consider a contribution to this worthy endeavor. A handsome donation plaque attached to the bin will also recognize your generosity.  Placing more of these recycling bins in the parks encourages resident recycling, reduces the efforts of the parks staff to collect recyclables and waste and helps to unify and beautify North Castle’s public spaces.

2010 Zero Waste Day Contributions Fund New Recycling Bin

The Recycling Committee has purchased a new 3-source recycling bin funded by the donations collected from North Castle residents during the April and October 2010 Zero Waste Days.  A plaque commemorating the generosity of local residents reads:  Donated by Residents of North Castle, Zero Waste Day 2010. Come by Legion Field (behind Town Hall) and admire the new addition.

The Recycling Committee would like to thank you for your continued support
to help us increase recycling in North Castle.

Recyclopedia: A Guide to Recycling Practically Everything

The North Castle Recycling Committee is extremely pleased to announce the launch of Recyclopedia, an A-Z guide to recycling or reusing many household items.  As the Recycling Committee’s page within the Town’s website begins to take on a whole new look, be sure to look for Recyclopedia. The result of hundreds of hours, lead by principal author and committee member, Beth Pollack, this guide aims to assist both the most dedicated recycler and those who are just getting started.  Designed to be interactive and informative, Recyclopedia lists over 200 items that can be recycled or reused.  The launch is scheduled to coincide with Zero Waste Day on April 30th.  Be sure to come take a peak and please give us your feedback.  We need your input to ensure Recyclopedia is a useable and useful resource.
