Population and Housing Information

According to the U.S. Census, the total population of the Town of North Castle was 10,849 people in the year 2000. This represented an increase of 7.8% or 788 people since 1990, when North Castle's population was 10,061.  Also, according to the Census, there were a total of 3,522 dwelling units in North Castle in 1990 which increased to 3,706 in 2000. The latter number consisted of 3,260 single-family detached homes, 119 single-family attached homes (e.g. at such developments as Wampus Close, Whippoorwill Ridge and Whippoorwill Hills in Armonk and at Castle Glen in North White Plains), 205 units in 2-unit structures and 122 units in multi-family structures (defined as 3 or more units per building). More than half of the latter group are in the 3- to 4-unit per building category and, therefore, quite likely include some buildings with 3 or 4 attached townhouses.

Based upon the above data, the average population per dwelling unit in North Castle was 2.93 persons in the year 2000. This represented a decline from the 3.00 average which was estimated to exist at the time of the preparation of the 1996 Town Plan Update. It is a reflection of the “aging in place” of many households.

According to information obtained from the Town Building Department, it is estimated that there have been 282 new dwelling units constructed in the Town of North Castle since the 2000 Census, offset by approximately 30 to 35 teardowns.  This yields a net increase of approximately 250 homes and results in an estimated current total of 3,956 dwelling units. The substantial difference between the number of new lots created and the number of new homes built is explained in large part by the earlier subdivision approval of the Whippoorwill Hills and Whippoorwill Ridge developments.  Based upon the nature of the new units, i.e. a combination of one-family, two-family and townhouse dwellings, it is estimated that the current population of North Castle has grown to approximately 11,500 people. This represents an increase of approximately 650 people living in North Castle during the past five years, almost as much as the increase during the entire decade of 1990-2000 (788 people).

At the time of the preparation of the Comprehensive Plan Update – 1996, it was estimated that there were approximately 3,200 dwelling units in North Castle.
