TEEN TOUR 2008
(Finishing Grades 6-9)
By Jerry Stroud
Another summer season will soon be upon us. It’s not easy to juggle your teenager’s summer schedule but The North Castle Recreation Department and Tour 2008 will make it a snap as it has for others since its inception in 1994. North Castle Recreation has provided a summer experience for students finishing grade 6 through 9 that has continued to grow in popularity over the past fourteen years. North Castle’s Teen Travel Camp (Tour 2008) continues to develop and improve to provide a safe, fun and exciting summer experience for many of the children who grow up in the North Castle community. As supervisor of this program I take pride in the standards we maintain. I am confident in saying that our Teen Travel Camp is unmatched by any other municipal camp in Westchester County. I contribute our success to some of the following factors:
Exciting Destinations and Activities
Trips may vary in location from year to year but will consist of the same excitement and enthusiasm. The schedule is an ongoing pursuit of the perfect itinerary. This year will consist of many of the same trips taken in the past – trips that have been teen tested and proven to enjoyable year after year. Many trips and activities will be new experiences for your child as well as for the staff. Our trips may be to places that your child has visited with family or friends before. Don’t let this affect your enthusiasm. Many of these locations change through the seasons and they are continually adding new and exciting attractions.
Friends
This is a factor for which there is no substitute. Knowing that you will be spending time with familiar faces or signing up with a good friend is a comfort for both the parents and the teen.
Staff
Our staff is unmatched by any other. I believe that this is the number one reason why any camp is successful. The destination creates the interest, but the staff creates the experience. My staff consists of several Westchester County educators all of whom have at least five continuous years of service with our program. They are professional, supportive, nurturing, mature, experienced, courteous, dedicated, reliable, aware and most of all FUN! These are individuals who are positive role models for their students as well as our campers.
Overnight Trips
Our most popular attraction! All children love to get away from home at this age. It gives them a taste of independence.
Special Programming
Our program is an extension of the “family unit”. Many of our trips have the ingredients that you as a child grew up with. The focus is not necessarily on the destination but the programming we provide. From the time your child is in our care, our job of making their summer special begins. In fourteen years I have seldom heard “Are we there yet?”
Atmosphere
We try very hard to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed both physically and emotionally. We travel in coach buses to all our locations outside a 45 minute range.
Favorite movies are shown during all trips when not providing other entertainment such as trivia games, bingo, who’s who, bus karaoke, license plate awareness and much more. Proper behavior is a number one priority when attending our camp. We like to treat our teens as young adults by giving them a bit more freedom then the traditional summer camp. However, when this privilege is misused and the conduct displayed affects others, that privilege will be taken away.
Flexible Schedule
Being able to provide you with a camp that is flexible makes it easier for your child’s schedule. We know that specialty camps, such as sports camps and sleep over camps are popular. We cannot compete with a child’s need for these types of camps nor do we want to. We are simply providing a service that gives an alternative or a supplement to those choices. We encourage your children to sign up for all four weeks but you can also sign up for individual weeks. You will be unable to break down trips on an individual basis.
We select trips that are exciting, fun and new. Our trips are supplemented with traditional road games as well as games our staff and your children request. Small groups and a mature educated staff insures that the interaction and attention your child receives is professional, courteous and caring. We provide all the ingredients for a safe, fun summer. I hope you take advantage of this wonderful opportunity by joining us this summer.
