About Sustainable North Castle

The Sustainable North Castle Committee was originally established in 2007 by the North Castle Town Board under the name of Global Warming Task Force. In its first year, the task force met with Byram Hills District leadership and board members, as well as with members of the Chamber of Commerce, to start collaborative relationships. The group held several public events including discussions, film screenings and a 'No Idling Day'.  A baseline carbon footprint study was also initiated for the Town of North Castle.  In its second year, the task force expanded and formed separate committees for Energy, Transportation and Land Use. A draft action plan was created for each committee and shared with over 70 local 'key stakeholders' including leaders of faith, business, residential and town entities.

In 2009, the name was changed to Sustainable North Castle in order to emphasize our focus on raising awareness of sustainability issues among residents, schools and businesses in North Castle.  We have focused on informing and providing guidance to our community by tabling at school and town functions; coordinating local events such as a composting demonstration and energy efficiency seminar; launching the Energize North Castle program to promote home energy assessments; creating educational videos for North Castle TV; and developing a Sustainable North Castle Facebook page.  We have also collaborated with the North Castle Recycling Committee on a plastic bag initiative and the development of this website, as well as participating in Zero Waste Day events.
