Landmarks Preservation Committee

Two Story House

The Landmarks Preservation Committee (LPC) is responsible for nominating historical and other special property for designation as landmarks, so that they can be safeguarded for future generations. Such nominations are subject to approval by the Town Board.

The Committee's work is controlled by Chapter 195 of the Town Code. It seeks to act in an impartial and objective spirit to serve the best interests of the entire North Castle community and to promote the preservation of the Town's historic and other special properties. There are over 100 homes in our Town that are at least 100 years old; some date back to the pre-Revolutionary era.

North Castle Landmarks Preservation District Number 1, created by vote of the Town Board on April 5, 1979, encompasses the Town Hall, Highway and Cornell Birdsall House properties, the Westchester Chinese Christian (old Methodist) Church property and, across the street on the north side of Bedford Road, the Bedford Road Historic District.

Bedford Road Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The District encompasses St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Cemetery, an out-building and 6 Greek Revival style houses, creating a linear assemblage of 7 contiguous properties. The uniform spacing, set back of the buildings and regularity of the design of the houses enhances the streetscape.

On May 30, 2015, the Committee together with the North Castle Historical Society conducted a bus tour of historic sites in North Castle, from North White Plains to Banksville, and Armonk. The bus tour was conducted again on November 14, 2015.

Anyone interested in designating a historic or other special structure must apply directly to the Landmarks Preservation Committee.

If you own a landmarked home, exterior alterations are subject to the issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness by the LPC; no such approval is required for any interior alterations.

Prior to the commencement of any work requiring a certificate of appropriateness, the owner shall file an application for such a certificate with the LPC. Read about the application requirements.

The Town of North Castle has been designated a Preserve America Community. It has recently been designated a Certified Local Government. The Certified Local Government Program is a preservation partnership between local, state and national governments focused on promoting historic preservation at the grass roots level. This designation gives the Town access to the expert technical advice of the State Offices as well as the National Park Service.
