GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The skilled laborer performs building and grounds maintenance work related to maintaining the water and sewer treatment facilities as needed. The incumbent assists water and sewer staff as needed to meet goals of the department and perform other related work as required. 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Under the supervision of the Water & Sewer Superintendent or Water & Sewer Foreman or designee, the incumbent assists in the operation and maintenance of the department buildings, grounds and stations, collection systems, water treatment facilities, distribution systems, and storage facilities. The incumbent assists with repairs of the water and sewer department, including water main breaks and service leaks, as well as collection system repairs. Performs housekeeping duties at all facilities and other work as required. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

• Operates pumps, compressors and generators; assists in servicing pumps, motors, fire hydrants, generators and associated utility operations equipment.

• Operates various equipment including but not limited to, lawn mowers, weed whackers, hedge trimmer, power and manual broom, shovel, rake, pressure washer, grinders, etc.

• Assists with repairs of the water and sewer department, including water main breaks and service leaks as well as collection system repairs, removing and installing pipes, digging trenches for pipes.

• Assists in installing and reading water meters; locating water or sewer lines.

• Performs minor repairs in the electrical, carpentry and plumbing field.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Responds to late night/weekend calls or emergency repairs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Ability to perform equipment maintenance and service. Ability to maintain and interpret records. Knowledge of equipment operations and repair of pumps, motors, and electrical equipment. Knowledge of methods, principals, techniques. Ability to organize and carry out specific assignments. Ability to deal effectively with the public and associates. Knowledge of the processes and equipment employed in water and sewer. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Either (a) high school graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience as a laborer or (b) six years of experience as a laborer, or (c) satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Employee is required to operate automotive equipment: possession, at time of appointment, of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, appropriate to the equipment being operated.
