Disaster & Emergency Preparedness

The North Castle Citizen Corps Council (NC4)

NC4 is a group of volunteers organized under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Americorps Program, administered under the New York State Emergency Management Office, and in partnership with the American Red Cross. NC4 is tasked with facilitating an opportunity for every Town resident to participate in the Town of North Castle's Emergency Preparedness Plan.

The NC4 is seeking volunteers of all ages to assist in its programs. It will arrange for you to be trained by the American Red Cross, its partner in this endeavor, and by other government agencies that sponsor emergency & disaster preparedness training courses.

For more information, please contact Jane Cahn.

What can you do to prepare for a large-scale emergency?

Establish a Disaster Supplies Kit!  It’s easy and can be a fun project to do with your children.  Here is a basic list of items that should be in your kit. For a more extensive list, visit an American Red Cross or FEMA website.

The basic list is as follows:

  • Three-day supply of water (one gallon of water per person, per day)
  • Three-day supply of nonperishable food and a MANUAL can opener
  • Portable, battery powered radio and/or television and extra batteries
  • Flashlight(s) and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Sanitation and hygiene items (toothbrushes, moist towelettes, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Extra clothing and blankets, especially “cold weather” clothing.
  • Credit card and cash
  • Matches in waterproof container
  • Deck of cards
  • Pet supplies – food, etc .
