Leftovers to Recycle

Benefits to sorting your food waste:
  1. Reduce methane gas in landfills
  2. Save the town money because your trash will weigh significantly less.
  3. You will become a more conscious buyer because you will see your waste build up.
  4. Your kitchen garbage will no longer be smelly. Your counter pail won’t be either, we promise.

Lombardi Park is open dawn to dusk. The toters are located across from the white house as you exit the park. The toters are monitored daily by volunteers. To become a volunteer email us.

The Rules:
  1. Follow the acceptable items list. If you are questioning an item, throw it out.
  2. Only use 100% compostable bags
  3. This is not a dump. Trash can NOT be left at Lombardi Park.
  4. This is not a recycling center. Recyclables can NOT be left at Lombardi Park.
  5. Do rotate to a new toter if you notice that the two sitting out are full..
Q&A:

Goal of the program: to remove 120,000 pounds of waste saving the town money and removing methane gas production from the environment.

Why Food Scrap Recycle?

Not everybody can home compost. This program removes heavy food waste from curbside garbage collection, saving the town money.  The program enables organic matter to be returned to the soil instead of being burned in an incinerator and adding to air pollution and/or decomposing as methane, the worst greenhouse gas.

Where do the food scraps go?

To a commercial composting facility in upstate NY.

Doesn’t the trucking offset the environmental benefits?

Not by a long shot. The CO2 emitted is nothing compared to the savings of methane gas emissions.

Where do I get a Starter Kit?

Kits are available for $25.00 at the Town Clerk's Office, North Castle Town Hall, 15 Bedford Road, Armonk.

How do I get more compostable liners?

New rolls of bioplastic compostable liners are not available now but will be available at the Town Clerk's Office. They will cost $2 for the kitchen container and $6 for the transportation container. These liners are less expensive and better quality than what you will receive from Amazon.

Where do I keep these containers?

Many people keep the kitchen container on their counter. It will not smell. Keep the Transportation container in the garage or outside.

Do I have to use the town kits?

No. You can use your own containers.

Doesn’t the food smell?

If you leave it too long, yes. The kitchen container has holes in the top so air circulates. The transportation container has a solid locking lid. Most people drop their scraps off at least once a week with no odor problems.

I already compost in my yard. Why should I do this?

The community program supplements home composting by accepting items (like meat, bones, citrus, dairy, etc.) that can’t be composted outside as they will attract unwanted pests.
